Nicholas Cooper, AIA
Nicholas "Nick" Cooper is an architect, community builder, and visionary leader with more than 23 years of experience shaping places, organizations, and relationships across the built environment. Throughout his career, he has led award-winning work spanning mixed-use development, civic and cultural projects, healthcare, education, innovation districts, adaptive reuse, and urban design while holding leadership positions at HKS, Hanbury, and LaBella Associates.
Known for his belief that great design begins with listening, Nick has dedicated much of his career to community engagement, mentorship, and cultivating the next generation of designers and critical thinkers. His work has been recognized nationally and internationally, but he is equally proud of his service to organizations such as Storefront for Community Design, AIA Richmond, Henrico CASA, and numerous educational initiatives throughout the Richmond region.
In 2026, Nick founded NBVC Collective, a purpose-driven organization focused on visionary innovation through the built environment. Rooted in the principles of understanding needs, believing in human potential, amplifying diverse voices, and continually cultivating community, NBVC represents the culmination of decades spent learning that architecture is ultimately about people.
In this conversation, Nick reflects on the experiences, relationships, and moments of clarity that led him from leading teams and projects to building a collective dedicated to helping communities, organizations, and individuals realize their visions with greater purpose and impact.
